EDITORIAL: Apache can't read minds
OK, so the Apache staff doesn't have a crystal ball. Although, on a few rare occasions it may seem as if we do and can predict the future.
The college board approved a six-cent tax rate increase last month that allowed IVCC to achieve equalization.
In the Oct. 5 edition of the Apache, this space criticized the board for not using this opportunity to increase the rate. The editorial stated the board should increase the rate instead of increasing tuition. The Apache was unaware the board had planned to increase the rate and had allotted for the increase in the budget without directly stating this with the approval of the budget.
The Apache learned of this only days after the Oct. 5 edition went to the presses.
The board had known it was going to raise the rate when it first learned of its ability to do so, last January. However, at the time, it wasn't certain as to when the rate increase would take effect.
In the future, such mishaps can be avoided if IVCC's administration keeps in communication with the Apache.
Our readers are interested in the decisions that are being made for the college. The Apache can't provide information about those decisions without cooperation from the board.
With the board's help, we can shatter any notion of the Apache having a crystal ball. We can throw away our absurd-looking wizard hats to.
