Student Response: Should we change the Apache?
SHOULD WE CHANGE THE APACHE? Faculty Response |
WHAT THE NEWSPAPER STAFF THINKS
EDITORIAL: Time for the board to take
action |
-No. Most civil rights people act before thinking about what other people feel. A
person, such as myself, who is part Apache, has no problem with the name.
Jose Mirando,
-No. I think Indians should be honored that we recognize them for something.
Kyle Nevins,
-No.
The Indians are just being babies about trying to get their own way.
Mary Mankus,
-I dont think its offensive, but then Im not Native American.
Patty Walters,
-Yes. We dont have the right to parade around a culture thats been around
for centuries. Since its a predominantly all-white school, they should pick
something from that culture or a mixed culture and get permission from a Native American
Indian council.
Sylvia Marquis-Hurst,
-No. I dont see what the big deal is. Maybe its a tribute and not meant to
be offensive.
Juanita Chavez
-Yes. The name should be something acceptable in society.
John Hartenbower,
-No. It has been the mascot since IVCC has been around and it has not been a problem.
Jesse Wooddell,
-No. If we change mascots for the Indians, who else are we going to change for? Before
you know it, all the mascots will be inanimate objects.
Stephanie Olson,
-No because its fine as long as we dont discriminate against them.
Amanda Peterson,
-No because its not offending anyone and we chose the name a long time ago.
Amanda Kennedy,
- F*** no! Theyre warriors; Indians.
