       Student Response

Teachers, students divided on mascot issue

WHAT THE NEWSPAPER STAFF THINKS

EDITORIAL:  Time for the board to take action
COLUMN:   A change will do no good
COLUMN:   It's time for a change

-Yes. Many people of Native American heritage are offended by these uses of their heritage and ancestry in a way that de-humanizes them and casts them on par with animals.
Kim Radek, English

-Yes. Tradition, the fact that we’ve used the name for a long time, doesn’t seem to me to be an adequate justification for continuing a practice that many find offensive. The fact that some don’t find it offensive doesn’t make it any less offensive to many.
Geoff Schmidt, English

- Yes. For those who think we are honoring Native Americans, I suggest we do more to seriously honor the tradition.
Kim Abel, nursing

-Yes, yes, yes. The use of the name is probably offensive to an existing Indian tribe and has absolutely no local connection. I’ve been offended for 30 years.
Jerry Annel, psychology

-Yes. For years I’ve been trying to convince members of the newspaper staff to change the newspaper name. Obviously newspaper staff members have been unwilling to make the change.
Rose Marie Lynch, journalism

-Yes. The name might not offend local people, but for newcomers it may represent us in a poor light.
Margaret Allen, Work Transition Coordinator

-Yes. Apparently we need to change with the times
Frances O’Brien, nursing

-Maybe we should all just lighten up a little bit. It’s time to quit sweating the small stuff.
Alice Steljes, accounting
