EDITORIAL:  Financial aid not for holidays

Back to Apache home page

Taxpayers pay a good portion of the cost of classes, services, and improvements for our college and its students. In turn, the school provides its services to be utilized by any of these taxpayers within its district at minimal fees. For those who still cannot afford to pay their bills and further their education at the same time, we offer financial assistance.

That aid is necessary to many students, taking textbook costs, transportation expenses, and childcare fees into consideration.

The people and taxpayers that make this assistance possible, however, did not intend it to be used for cruises or a Spring Break vacation to the Caribbean. Any student that has the money to spare for such luxuries is obviously not in need of financial aid.

In the March 13 issue of the Apache, there was an article on page 1 explaining why checks that are disbursed by the Financial Aid office to students were delayed. The delay may have caused problems for those students who honestly depend on the money, but it also raised an interesting question as to what some students needed that money for. The residents of this district would be shocked at the notion that while they are hard at work making these tax dollars that they are also helping to send students to exotic locations for Spring Break.

Students that honestly need every dime granted to them were also rightfully angry, but after the initial shock was over, they may have applauded the fact that new computer system delayed the checks, and spoiled a Spring Break in the tropics for some.
