APACHE FIRST CLASS: The Apache has been named a First Class newspaper and awarded Two Marks of Distinction by the Associated Collegiate Press for issues published in 1997-98. The Marks of Distinction, given for exemplary work, were in Coverage and Content and in Photography, Art and Graphics.
The ACP judge commended the Apache for "hard news coverage of significant events affecting students, creative features, info. graphics chock full of pertinent and beneficial information, editorials packaged with major news stories. Impressive for a staff small in number."
FIELD TRIP OPEN: A bus trip to include Mobil Chemical in Joliet, another chemical company to be decided and dinner at the Medieval Times is being planned for Feb. 12 by the American Chemical Society. Cost of the trip, transportation included, is $25 per person.
Money should be submitted to Robert Byrne, ACS advisor; to Julie Gula, ACS secretary; or to any other ACS officer by Feb. 3.
BAKED GOODIES: The American Chemical Society will have a bake sale on Feb. 11 starting at 8 a.m. outside of the cafeteria.

CALL FOR WRITERS: River Currents, the IVCC literary magazine, will be accepting submissions of poetry, fiction, creative essays, plays, film scripts and artwork through Feb. 9. Co-advisor Geoff Schmidt said all submissions should include a name, address and phone number, but they will be considered anonymously.
Submissions should be slid under Schmidts door at A-315 or Kim Radeks door at A-311. Submissions will be returned if they are accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
THEATRE FESTIVAL HERE: IVCC will host the 1999 Illinois Theatre Association Undergraduate Theatre Festival on April 17.
Guest artist of the festival will be Brian Lynch, who recently spent seven years touring nationally and internationally with various Broadway musicals including a two-year stint performing the starring role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables.
Lynch will be teaching a Master Class workshop, with volunteer participants.

KIDZ KAMP: A day camp for grade-school-age children will be provided in the upper gym April 5 though 9 when area grade schools will be on Easter break.
A Tech Prep project, the camp is a MIMIC-service program offered by students in early childhood education, educational psychology, business, accounting, computer science, management, marketing and micro-office technology.

NEED DENTAL WORK? The Dental Assisting Program is seeking patients in need of a dental exam, x-rays, fillings or sealants. Treatment is being offered free of charge to currently enrolled students and to college employees.
Pat Pearson, dental assisting instructor, said, "We are not looking for patients who only need their teeth cleaned; we are preparing students to be dental assistants not dental hygienists."

Free full mouth radiographs for students and staff are also being taken.

PAYING FOR SCHOOLS: Michael Nelson of Illinois State University will discuss "Problems and Issues Surrounding School Finance" at the next Honors Colloquium on Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. in F-113.
The program is open to the public and free of charge.
NURSES IN SPOTLIGHT: Pictures of students who will graduate from the nursing program in May are tentatively scheduled to be taken on Feb. 18. Kim Briddick, Student Nurse Association public relations director said details would be posted on the nursing bulletin board.
Briddick said student nurses should also note that a team from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission will be on campus Feb. 23 - 25 evaluating IVCCs program for re-accreditation.
PAYING FOR COLLEGE: High school seniors and juniors, parents and adults considering returning to college are invited to attend a Financial Aid Night at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Cultural Centre.
The event will include a general introduction, a seminar conducted by financial aid professionals and information on state, private and community college aid. Further information is available from ext. 438.
HELP APPLYING FOR $$: IVCC will host FAFSA Completion Night on Feb. 18 to help visitors complete the 1999-2000 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The event is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.
