Intramurals are getting underway with a 3 - on - 3 basketball league and chess, set to begin before the end of February.
Athletic Director Mike Riley said the activities would be scheduled as soon as sign up sheets started to come in. Forms to sign up for are available in the athletic office, G-211, from the SGA office C-103, and from any SGA member.
Intramurals are open to all part-time and full-time students, faculty and staff. Riley said they hoped to set up three divisions in the 3 - on - 3 basketball -- men, women and coed -- with four players on a team.
A Student Government Association survey last month, which showed high interest in basketball, flag football, and softball, resulted in the organization of these first intramurals of the school year.
Of the 150 students surveyed, 97 said they were interested in flag football, 83 in basketball, 70 in softball, 31 in a home run derby and 25 fin chess.
Athletic Director Mike Riley said the lack of an intramural director has been the problem.
"There was some money in the budget for the (intramural) activities, but no money for a director," Riley said.
Former football coach Chuck Goodwin headed intramurals last year, but no one was appointed to take his place this fall.
Jeff Twardowski, SGA president, said the survey was conducted to get the intramural program going.
Riley said he was happy for their help.
"The student government met with me and asked what we could do to get intramurals going this year," Riley said. "Anything the student government wants to do is great. Well take all the help we can get with this."
Riley said he hoped an intramural director could be appointed for next year.
