A grant of $1,000 has been awarded to Bob Byrne, physical science instructor, to be used for the River Study Project.

The grant was provided by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Natural Heritage Division from contributions to the Illinois Wildlife Preservation Fund.

Since 1994, Byrne and a team of instructors and students at IVCC, have been monitoring the water quality in some areas of the Little Vermilion. The grant allows them to extend testing to another site, the Mitchell’s Grove Nature Preserve on the Little Vermilion and Tomahawk Creek.

Among the goals of the project, Byrne said, is "to illustrate practical applications of information from the classroom and instill appreciation for the ecosystem."

Other instructors who participate in the River Study Project are Mike Phillips, Tim Horger, Pat Cole, Doug Stockley and Sue Caley.

The grant runs out in June but may be reapplied for.
