A proposal for tuition waivers may go to the College Board at their April 19 meeting.

Dr. Robert Marshall, vice president of student services, said an initial draft of a proposal for waivers is being circulated to the college faculty, staff and division chairs. The proposal would provide waivers to athletes and to students in some activities.

Dr. Marshall said he researched waivers offered by colleges about the size of IVCC and by the colleges in the Arrowhead Conference that IVCC will join next year in drawing up the proposal.

He said he wanted the final proposal to be "a reasonable first step, to offer waivers to students that are in line with other colleges our size and in our conference."

SGA President Jeff Twardowski favors the waivers.

"If the students put effort into the school by participating in athletics or activities, then they should get something out of it," Twardowski said.

Dr. Marshall said the proposal requires students to maintain a minimum grade point average, to be enrolled in a minimum number of credit hours, and to participate in the activity for which they receive the waiver. As long as they meet the requirements, he said, the waiver could be renewable for up to two years or 64 credit hours.

How will the Board vote?

Dr. Marshall said "I think it will be approved."
