IVCC will be ready for year 2000
by Staci J. Sessler
As the world prepares for Y2K, IVCC will have nothing to worry about.
Due to the efforts of several teams that have been under the careful watch of Harold Barnes, Director of Computer Services, Chris Dunlap, Network Specialist, and Jim Gibson, an electronics instructor, IVCC will be prepared to face the new year.
Barnes said that the preparation for Y2K actually started about four years ago.
"The Dell web site has a list of Y2K compliancies," Barnes said. "The inventory has been checked and is currently being rechecked."
According to Barnes, by the year 2000, all modules and software will be Y2K compliant. The Financial Department will be the first up and running, which is scheduled to be completed by July 1. Beginning at the end of September, registration will be done on the new system.
Some of the faculty computers still require updating. A number of them will just be replaced, while others will be updated with new hardware and software.
"We are scheduled to receive 100 to 150 new computers that will be placed in the labs," Barnes said. "Some of the lab computers will then be moved into faculty offices."
Though all major systems will be set up and in place by the year 2000, there will be some minor enhancements that will be done throughout the rest of the year.
Karen Henkel, an accountant at IVCC, said that with the change in the new software system, they needed accurate information, such as addresses, from all of the colleges vendors.
"On the letter we sent out was the question asking them if they will be Y2K compliant," she said. "We sent out thousands of letters and are getting many back."
If they do not hear anything back from key vendors, they will either have to call them to find out if they will be Y2K compliant, or they will send them another letter.
