To story about the big fix of '47: Apache picked as L-P-O Junior College mascot To story about the color purple: college color predates team name To student newspaper report of Apache name choice in 1947

In 1942, Spartan was selected as the name for teams at LaSalle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College, but the name was never used.

A contest to select an athletic mascot for L-P-O, IVCCs predecessor, was announced in the Hi-Co Courier student newspaper in January 1942.

Spartans was declared the winner in a March 1942 issue of the paper. Robert Beaumont, an L-P-O sophomore, submitted the winning name. The selection was made by Dean Harry Wilmot, football coach Merlyn Burris and coach Leslie Hoenscheid.

The Spartan mascot name is never mentioned again.
