Student newspaper reports Apache name choice in 1947
To story about the big fix of '47: The Apache picked as L-P-O mascot | To story about the color purple: college college predates team name | To story about Spartans: team name picked in 1942, never used |
Below is how the vote for the Apache was reported in the March 6, 1947, issue of the newspaper being published by students at L-P-O Junior College and L-P High School. As coach John Strell revealed in the story above, the list of mascot names did not include Comanche.
The story reads:
Although a desperate attempt by the lobbyists was made to promote a write in name for the J.C. athletic teams, the name of APACHE struck a note of approval to the ears of 179 of the J.C. voters.
The outcome of the election of Thursday, February 27, is as follows:
Apaches 179
Choppers 24
Purple Raiders 21
Invaders 6
All athletic teams, be they football, basketball, track, swimming, or what have you, will now be known as the L-P-O APACHES.
