Fiction writer, playwright to visit campus
Fiction writer, playwright and Esquire golf columnist Tom Chiarella will present an afternoon lecture and an evening fiction reading on campus Sept. 20.
At 2 p.m. in Room F-113, Chiarella will present an Honors Colloquium on "Sportswriting in America." At 7 p.m. in the Fireplace Lounge, Chiarella will read from his work, a recent Esquire column and a short story. The reading will last approximately an hour.
Chiarellas essays on golf have appeared regularly in Esquire for the last year and a half, and his profile of golfer John Daly appeared in the April 2000 issue.
His first collection of stories, "Foleys Luck," was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1992 to wide acclaim.
Chiarella chairs the English Department at DePauw College in Greencastle, Ind. In addition to his fiction and essay publications, hes had a half-dozen plays produced in and around Indianapolis, and is the author of a textbook entitled "Writing Dialogue," published by Writers Digest Books in 1998.
Both presentations are free and open to the public.
