OUT OF BOUNDS COLUMN: It's your turn to help IVCC go, fight, win!
By Nate Bloomquist
College basketball season is great. Whether youre a fan of the Fighting Illini, defending national champ Michigan State University, or Eastern Illinois University, college basketball season is exciting.
The fight for making it to the national tournament is always action packed.
The upsets during the regular season and during March Madness is what playing basketball at the college level is all about. It gives fans good reason to root for the underdog. Fans are crazy for their college basketball. They come to stadiums in droves, toting were No. 1 mitts and are doused with face paint.
They have their chants, and jeers prepared for the opposing team.
They are loyal to their own team and will hold no referee, or opposing coach as their prisoner.
And what riles all of these fans up besides the alleged bad ref call, or cheap foul? The band.
Fight songs are often the life blood of the college basketball experience. The bands are like the superfans of the team as they belt out fight songs and rally cries during time-outs or at minor breaks in the action.
But hordes of people arent at IVCC basketball games. This isnt because the Apache squads arent worthy of the fans attention, as IVCCs teams are having winning seasons.
Would bringing back Apache Joe bring in the fans, or possibly a squad of cheerleaders? Nope.
What IVCC needs is a school fight song.
Im sure IVCC can amass a group of students to play at a few basketball games simply to liven the crowd up. An intrepid IVCC music major or professor could write the music. Heres a suggestion for the lyrics:
We will fight, fight, fight for ol IV
Apaches bear down tonight
Push on, push ahead for victory
Go U purple, Go U white
Go I-V-C-C and fight, fight, fightHail, hail ol IV
We will keep our loyalty to thee
Well jump and shout and show our might
Go I-V-C-C and fight, fight, fight
March on, march on ol IV
Rah! rah! rah!
Fight you Apaches for glory
Victory will be ours to claim
Go on and win this game
This was only a suggestion. If you think you can write better lyrics to a school song for IVCC, try us.
Send in your song to the Apache via e-mail, (rmlynch@ivcc.edu) or drop off your entry to the Apache office in room B-316. Please send in your entry by Feb. 1.
The Apache staff will pick the winner, which will be published in a spring semester issue of the Apache. The winner will also receive a cash prize.
