SECOND TIME AROUND COLUMN: Hang in there - new semester, year is near
By B. Eddie Bauman
The semester is almost over. The end is in sight. There is a sense of calm settling over the campus; or is it lethargy? Maybe everyone is still feeling the effects of too much Thanksgiving turkey. Maybe its time for a break.
November 14 was the cut-off date for withdrawals and an amazing number of students took advantage of that deadline. Many of my classes have diminished to half their original size. The students who are still around seem comatose. I feel we have to keep reminding ourselves that we still have to pass our finals.
Someday I would like to do a study on the difference between fall semester grades and spring semester grades. I cant help but think the spring grades have to be better.
Fall is cold and depressing. We start our classes in beautiful weather and it gets progressively worse all semester.
The campus starts out lush and green and ends up stark and brown. It is hard to keep your enthusiasm up when youd really rather be in bed under your warm covers.
I think spring semester will breath new life into all of us. We will start our classes sporting our Christmas gifts and well rested after our long break. The walk to the parking lot will get shorter with each rise in the temperature.
Our bulk of outerwear will get lighter instead of heavier. The campus will be so much more attractive by semesters end.
If youve had a tough semester, take heart. You will probably enjoy spring term more than you did this one.
If you made it through this one, you will glide through the next one. Dont be discouraged by anything that transpired in fall of 2000. January will start a whole new year. You will begin refreshed and finish energized. Your evening classes will begin in the dark in January and end during daylight by semesters end.
Convince yourself that the next semester will be great and it will. Convince yourself that you will do better. Spring brings out the best in all of us. Just dont forget to study for this semesters finals.
