Most computer labs are locked when unsupervised this fall because some students misused the equipment and accessed and printed sexually explicit materials in previous semesters.
Harold Barnes, computer services director, said there is not enough staff to supervise all of the labs at the same time, so during the summer, previously open labs were locked.
LRC-D lab is supervised and open during the hours the college is open: Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 9:30 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon.
The CAD lab, in A-209, is open when staffed by a student assistant and when not scheduled for a class.
Barnes said a few students were disciplined last year for misusing the computers.
He explained that all transactions on the IVCC system are logged and can be traced, and although the process takes a long time, when a problem is suspected, the material and the user can be tracked.
Barnes said 48 new computers have been installed in LRC-D and 12 more new ones should be installed before spring semester.
