The volleyball team has begun their first season under new coach Laurie Polte with an overall record of 5-9 and a conference mark of 1-3.

The Lady Apaches are coming off of a loss on September 23 at the hands of South Suburban, by scores of 14-16, 12-15, and 4-15.

The previous game, played at Harper College got the team a win, but not without a costly injury.

With the team up 11-0, Tina Thompson sustained a severely sprained ankle. The team won the first game 15-6, but struggled in the following games.

"It was a really good match because we fought and came back to win," Polte said.

Amy Kozikowski led the team with 22 points and five aces, followed by Nicki Huettemann’s 14 points and 4 aces.

According to Polte, Thompson’s injury will not keep her from being back and ready to play for the Sept. 30 game against conference rival and top-ranked Kishwaukee, who the Lady Apaches will see for the first time.

"From their record and by who they have played, they seem very good," said the coach.

Other upcoming games for IVCC include the Lincoln/Olney/Springfield Quad. on October 2 at Lincoln at 11 a.m., and their next home game on October 5 against Joliet at 7 p.m..
