The Bookstore is selling books that have been banned at a 15 percent discount in observance of Banned Books Week.

The week, Sept. 25 to Oct. 2, is sponsored by the American Library Association which says its mission is to guarantee the availability of unorthodox or unpopular attitudes to all who wish to read them.

Carol Bird, IVCC head librarian, said, "We librarians believe people have the right to read what they want to read."

Some recently banned books are on display in the Bookstore with a card indicating why the book was banned. Those books include:

"The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier which was banned for being too "sexually explicit,"

"Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck which includes "offensive language,"

"Goosebumps Series and Fear Street Series" by R. L. Stein which depicts "occult or satanic" themes,

"Blubber" by Judy Blume which has "offensive language" and is "inappropriate for its intended age group.

Bookstore employee Katie Kibilka said, "I think it's a good opportunity because the students can read what they want. No one has the right to tell you what you can and can't read."
