ONCE MORE UNTO THE BREACH COLUMN: Some things change, some don't
By Ken Schroeder
Certain moments in your past seem to stand out more than others. Im sure many of us remember those "firsts:" Your first time behind the wheel. Your first real kiss. The first time you ahem!Anyway, these days, I find myself remembering more and more the first time I attended IVCC, during the spring of 79. (Yes, that does date me rather well. What comforts me is the fact that two of my three instructors from that year are still teaching at IVCC.)
What do I remember? Several myriad things:
LRC-D used to be the student lounge/gameroom. Chief among the video games then was a football game with a trackball that I used to batter my hands into a pulp on. LRC-D was also where theatre productions were staged, although the Cultural Center was in the planning stages at the time.
The Fireplace Lounge was that: A lounge with couches and chairs that you could feel comfortable in. I spent a lot of time between classes cashed out on the couches there.
The courtyard was locked almost everyday. Energy conservation was the excuse, but that answer just didnt seem satisfactory at the time.
Dixies trees. Anyone who was here at the time already knows what Im talking about. If you werent, sorry, but the story is too long and involved to go into. Suffice to say, sanity won out over a misguided attempt at esotericism.
The Apache office used to be where the Dislocated Workers Center is. Off to one side. Away from everyone else. Despite the "No food outside the cafeteria rules," we had banquets out there. Which is probably why were surrounded by offices now
Yeah, the shot locations have changed a bit, but really, not much else has. Despite clothing styles, bad haircuts, and the still unexplained need to wear a hat indoors, the students at IVCC today arent much different than the students 20 years ago, with the same concerns, the same after-school activities, and the same bitter tragedies.
The more things change, the more they stay the same
