Blood Drive a success

The Bloodmobile Drive on Sept 29 resulted in 80 units of blood and 56 tests for the national bone marrow registry.

Pam Mammano, Student Nurse Association advisor, called the bone marrow test number a "great response," exceeding what the SNA had planned for. The group had provided matching funds for 40 donors, so they are coming up with additional funds, she said.

Minority donors are especially in demand, Mammano said, so those nine samples were tested and registered free.

Mammano said she was also pleased with the response to the blood drive, especially from 32 first time donors.

"Hopefully, they will continue donating," she said.

The drive was sponsored by the SNA, but instructors Sue Caley, Greg Oseland and Mammano offered their students extra credit points for donating blood, testing for the registry, or working during the drive. Members of the Student Ambassadors also volunteered time.

"It was really fun to have students from nursing along with students from a couple of other disciplines working side by side," Mammano said. "I think they also enjoyed networking."

Food donations were provided by student nurses, instructors, and the following businesses: U.S. Food Service, Butternut, and Kroger in Streator, Jimmy Johns, Dunkin Donuts, Kroger, Subway and Eagles in Ottawa, Subway, Hy-Vee, and Big Apple Bagel in LaSalle-Peru, and Bogo's in Princeton.
