JUST A THOUGHT COLUMN: Dead man on camus

NATE BLOOMQUIST

He’s not easily seen, but he’s here. His name is unknown. Whoever this guy is, he’s vitally important to several students at IVCC. Who is this guy? He’s the dead man on campus, IVCC’s new cadaver.

According to Ron Groleau, chair of life science, the new dead guy was purchased (enrolled?) at the college for about $600. The cadaver came from (transferred from?) Northern Illinois University.

I guess it could be said that this new guy (why can’t he have a name?) is the only student to pick up a tuition waiver and he won’t live to tell about it.

Northern Illinois University mustn’t value life that much if they only charge $600 for a specimen. I would’ve thought a human body is worth more than $600. Why did the body come from NIU? Does Northern have a monopoly on the cadaver market? The government should look into this.

IVCC will definitely get its money’s worth out of the dead guy as NIU gave IVCC permission to keep the body as long as it needs to.

"In most cases we can only keep the cadavers for three years," said Groleau. "This one is special because the family didn’t ask for it back at a specific time."

Over this guy’s dead body, physiology and anatomy students can successfully transfer to Parkland Community College. Groleau said the body has already been dissected.

This is the third cadaver IVCC has had. Previously, IVCC students had a male and a female to dissect and inspect.

I’d continue, but this is really a dead issue.
