IVCC’s second online accounting course will debut in the spring.

Managerial Accounting – Internet, ACT 1020, will be offered online by Alice Steljes who taught Financial Accounting, ACT 1010, online for the first time this fall.

"Although our first class (ACT 1010) was small, they have been very enthusiastic," Steljes said. "All of those students have signed up for the new spring semester course."

Steljes explained that an Internet course is not a correspondence course or a telecourse.

"Students are not out there on their own," she said. "Intense and frequent interaction is an important aspect of the online course that differentiates it from such courses."

Students will be on campus for an orientation session and for two exams, a mid-term and a final. The instructor and students will then interact through the Internet several times each week, with the students interacting among themselves.

"Intense interaction among students will help make the online classroom a dynamic learning environment," she said.

Class assignments have specified due dates, but students can work online at any time of the day.

"The virtual classroom will be open to students 24 hours a day," Steljes said, "making it especially convenient for anyone with a busy schedule. I expect this course to appeal to a diverse group of students."

Steljes explained that Managerial Accounting explores how businesses keep the records they need to make decisions on pricing, adding or dropping product lines, compensation of managers, how to prepare budgets, how to calculate break-even points, how to allocate overhead costs and how to evaluate capital budgeting decisions.

To enroll, students need basic computer literacy including ability to use a Web browser, experience with word-processing software, and familiarity with e-mail. The computer used for the course must have an Internet connection, a word processing package such as Word or Wordperfect and a spreadsheet package such as EXCEL.
