The play’s the thing…to theatre students: Honorary raises money

IVCC’s Theatre Honorary promotes dramatic activities through performances, scholarship contributions, stage maintenance and community outreach efforts.

Last year the group’s performances of "A Christmas Carol," Giacomo Leone’s musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens’ classic, raised over $4,000. Most of the funds went to the Duguid-Muhich Scholarship fund which provides scholarships to IVCC theater majors. The fund is named after two former theater students.

Community groups which received donations last year from the honorary included IV Pads, the Illinois Valley Food Pantry, the Illinois Valley United Way, Stage 212, the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra and the Illinois Valley Fine Arts Trust.

The theatre group also donates equipment to the college’s theatre. Last year they purchased a power lift for setting lights in the Cultural Centre.

Members of the honorary participate in the Illinois Theater Association Undergraduate Theatre Festival. At Christmas the honorary also hosts a tea for members of the college faculty and staff.

Formerly affiliated with a national theatre honorary, Delta Psi Omega, the group decided last spring to drop their national affiliation. Leone said he and student members felt they weren’t getting anything for their dues.

The honorary is co-advised by Leone and theatre director Dr. David Kuester.
