The women’s volleyball team is looking to make a big hit this year.

"The team is very talented and expected to do well," said head coach Kirsten McClendon.

The team consists of sophomore middle Sarah Riebe, freshman Desiree Newman, sophomore setter Amanda Anderson, freshman setter Abby Stella, freshman hitter Michelle Kaps, freshman hitter Amber Vincent, and sophomore outsiders Leslie Urnikis and Jodi Carrico.

Caoch McClendon commenting on her team said "Our strengths are our individual players, but our weakness is the number of players. Since we only have eight with two injured and on the bench the depth of the team is a concern. The team is like Jekyll and Hyde, sometimes they play brilliant and sometimes they don’t show up."

One of the strongest players to watch is Riebe who brings a lot to the game. Another player to watch is Desiree Newman who has good blocking skills and is a good compliment to Riebe.

Coach McClendon brings an immense amount of coaching expertise to this team. This is Coach McClendon’s second year coaching college volleyball, and has also been coaching grade school for seven years. She has also played for 20 years spanning high school, and her four years of play at Augustana.

She is currently playing for a club team in Chicago.

When asked why she came back to IVCC, coach McClendon responded "They (the Administration) called and asked if I wanted to come back, since it was a lot easier on my time now and my love for working with college kids I said yes."

The Apaches now sit with an overall record of 5-4, and with an 0-1 record in conference play. The team will be in action again Friday night at home as they take on DuPage. Game time is scheduled for 6 pm.
