EDITORIAL: IVCC sports, history?

Back to Apache home page

Will the sports program at IVCC soon be just pages in the history books?

What is with students’ lack of participation?

The football program has been done away with permanently. So far this semester, the women’s tennis season has been canceled due to lack of participation. How can you have a team with only two players? (See story on page #)

And it’s not looking really good for the women’s basketball team either.

Maybe it’s not just sports in general, maybe it’s only women’s sports. So what does that say about the women on campus? Either they aren’t athletically inclined, or they are more worried about their grades. Or maybe they’re just too busy.

So what does this mean for the future of sports at the college? Are coaches going to have to start more heavy recruiting at local high schools? Or are they going to have to start shipping students in like they did for football?

Students need to become more involved in athletics and in all aspects of the college. College life isn’t just about going to class and doing the homework and getting the credits and grades. It needs to be a total experience which includes participating in clubs and organizations, joining athletic teams or going to athletic events, and going to classes. It’s about social interaction. It’s not something you can experience just by sitting in class listening to lectures.

So next time you have some free time or you’re thinking about what to do on the weekends, think about going to a basketball game or a baseball game. Or get ambitious and join the team yourself. You never know…you just may be the next Mark McGwire!
