CAMPUS COMMENT COLUMN: College can be fun
SARAH COCANOUR
It is my understanding that many people were offended by the "funny photos" taken during IVCCs Pow Wow (Sept. 2). The majority of the offended happened to be female. Because of this fact, I feel it is my responsibility as a woman to state my opinion on this issue.
I do agree that a college is a place of higher learning. It commands respect. But a college commanding respect does not mean that attending college cannot be fun. Fun is what the funny photos were for.
Just because people were offended by the images of the women with thin bodies and big breasts, should a female who has that body style be banned from attending college (she might take a males attention away from his studies)?
No woman was forced to have her picture taken and have her head superimposed on the body of a large-breasted woman. Anyone who did not want to partake in the activity did not have to.
It is wrong to teach girls that they have to be beautiful with big breasts to be successful in life because that is simply not true.
But we also cannot worry that something we do, for fun, might lead a girl to develop an eating disorder. She can turn on the television and see worse things than the displays at the funny photo booth.
We cannot watch over every one.
