The IVCC chapter of the American Chemical Society has received an award of Outstanding from the national organization and has been awarded two grants for projects scheduled for this academic year.

Only 24 of the approximately 900 ACS student chapters were named Outstanding by the Society’s Committee on Education. The award, for activities during the 1997-98 year, will be presented to IVCCs members at the ACS national meeting in Anaheim, Calif. on March 21, 1999.

In the past six years, the local chapter has received three Outstanding awards.

The grants the chapter has received for this year are $360 for their River Study Project and $200 for their Wonder Science and pHun Chemistry shows both from the national ACS organization.

The River Project grant was one of 22 Innovative Activities Grants awarded to ACS student affiliate chapters for research and community-oriented projects. Melanie Gleason is the student project director.

The Wonder Science and pHun Chemistry shows were awarded a Community Interaction-Student Affiliates grant. ACS secretary Julie Gula, said the major goal of the CISA program is to give children a chance to succeed in science.

"Through these shows (Wonder Science and pHun Chem), children are provided with enriched hands-on science activities, and the undergraduates are given an opportunity to enhance their skills as future teachers and mentors," Gula said.

Jamie Townsend is the student project director. Bob Byrne is the ACS faculty advisor.

ACS ACTIVITIES

Upcoming ACS activities include a lecture by health physicist Dr. Michael F. Weber on Oct. 20, river testing and canoeing on Oct. 24, and a bake sale on Oct. 29.

Dr. Weber, who is with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, will speak at 7 p.m. in the Fireplace Lounge. His lecture, "Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, or, Say Goodbye to Common Sense," is open to the public free of charge.

The river testing and canoeing Oct. 24 is open to everyone, Gula said. Anyone interested in participating should be in the turn-around in front of the main entrance to the college at 8:45 a.m. Canoeing will cost $17.50 per person.
