Lady Apaches Defeated in Opening Game
By Tony Nelson
The womens basketball team has a record of 0-1 with an 83-48 opening season loss to Highland on November 10. The game scheduled versus Black Hawk East on November 12 was canceled due to Black Hawk canceling its womens program.
According to the head coach, the lopsided score with Highland does not describe the true flow of the game. The Lady Apaches had a five point lead midway through the first half, were only down four with four minutes left in the first half, and were only down nine at half-time. However, with only six players who are able to play on the Lady Apache roster they "ran out of gas" according to Coach Joe Conroy.
"Having only six players is definitely a weakness of ours, but we always hustle and do things the right way," said Conroy. " No one tries to go out and do her own thing."
The Apaches had good individual efforts from sophomores Shelly Obermiller and Molly Heins. Obermiller had 23 points and 12 rebounds while Heins scored 15 and also pulled down 12 rebounds. Freshman Christina Borri added five points while playing in her first ever basketball game.
" I was glad to see Christina was not afraid to put it up," said Conroy "She was strong at the offensive end."
The Apaches have experienced a few injuries which are hindering them. Freshman guard Nicole Oberle from Ohio suffered a ACL injury in practice which will keep her out the entire season. Kristin Czyz is suffering from a heel injury, but hopes to be back by January 1.
The Lady Apaches upcoming games include the Black Hawk East tournament Nov. 27 and 28 even though the hosts dropped their program. John Wood College from Quincy has taken over as hosts.
"From these upcoming games we want to learn and fine tune our skills for the conference season," said Conroy.
