IVCC Graduates Liked by Employers

Employers like the IVCC graduates they have hired according to the most recent survey conducted by the Career Service Center.

The 50 employers, who rated 107 graduates they had hired since January, rated the former IVCC students an average of "good" on nine areas including job preparation, communication skills, attitude, flexibility, responsibility, and acceptance of criticism.

The graduates were rated highest on growth potential, a ranking of "superior," and lowest on maturity of judgement, a ranking of "average."

John Marzetta, Career Service Center Director, called the results very positive.

"I believe this survey shows a good partnership with our employers and students and substantiates the good job that the instructors are doing at the college," Marzetta said. "Our IVCC internships also received very positive feedback."

Marzetta said this survey, the third conducted by his office, is important because it helps the college understand what employers think about IVCC students.

"Their (employer) feedback is also very important to turn any negative comments into positive results," he said.

Marzetta explained that the negative remarks some employers made were not about the graduates they hired but "these (negative) comments were in regard to what they see at their interviews and job fairs where not only students attend, it is also open to the community."

Hygiene and dress and how to properly interview were areas of concern, Marzetta said.

"The shortage of good people for jobs is a national picture and not just a local snap shot," he said. "The three main skills employers are asking for are attendance, attitude and basic arithmetic skills."

The Career Service Center provides free workshops and Marzetta schedules individual appointments to assist students and members of the public with various areas of career planning.

Mentioning the partnerships his office has established with employers, he added, "We have over 800 employers that use our service (to find employees), so we must be doing something right."
