Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is a program in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for middle school girls.

Girls participate in hands-on activities during a typical once-a-week session.  At left, two girls use the scientific method to make hypotheses about the degree to which various sodas and reagents will react to form soda geysers.  On the right, the girls have the opportunity to experiment and discover what happens when Mentos are placed in soda.

The activities are designed to arouse the girls’ curiosity and provide opportunities to practice logical thinking and problem-solving.  The activities also incorporate teamwork, communication, and data analysis.

Through the activities, the girls are empowered with a sense of accomplishment.  They build self-confidence and experience first-hand that girls can do math and science.  Also, they see that involvement in STEM fields can be fun.

The girls create volcanic eruptions and learn about chemistry.

The girls design, build, and race their edible cars.
