High School, Junior High and Grade School Students Participate

The MIMIC project is being used as a magnet to interest young people in technical careers.  Pre-college students are invited to participate in MIMIC-related activities including field trips with the college students, the MIMIC Fair and the Edible Car Contest.

Career Fairs, held on the IVCC campus, are utilized as an avenue for presenting hands-on experiences.  Leadership Team students assist with those events as well as visiting area high schools to talk with prospective technical students.

High school and junior high school students are introduced to technical careers at career fairs on
the IVCC campus.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS DESIGN FOR MIMIC

Students at the Area Career Center / LaSalle Peru High School are redesigning products for the college MIMIC teams to produce and sell.  Dorene Perez, CAD/CAE Program Coordinator and a MIMIC instructor, is working with Shawn Schwingle, industrial education/drafting instructor at L-P.  Math and science concepts are being integrated into the redesigning project.

If the reengineered product is selected for production by a MIMIC team, the high school students will follow their product through the manufacturing, marketing and sales process at the college.

Perez and Schwingle were selected as a team to attend an NSF-funded workshop at the American Society for Engineering Education conference held in Chicago in June 2006.  The workshop focused on involving high school students in college projects.

In June 2007, Perez, Schwingle and NSF grant co-Principal Investigators Jim Gibson and Rose Marie Lynch gave a presentation on the participation of high school students in MIMIC at the American Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii.
