REENGINEERING

MIMIC students are reengineering products designed and sold by student companies in earlier years, not only to incorporate newer technology but also to improve the original design, functions, components, cost and ease of production. As a part of activities supported by a National Science Foundation grant, students in engineering design and electronics are being introduced to the MIMIC project, reengineering and continuous quality improvement in their freshman classes.

As the strobe light (below) illustrates, reengineering is improving the quality of the products.  The original product, at left, was well designed for its time, but it predates student access to rapid prototyping and mold making capability.  The reengineered product, at right, is not only more professional, it is more effective.  The original concentrated light upward from the box.  The new design distributes light more evenly throughout a room.
