Options considered for childcare center

TRUSTEE'S CORNER

IVCC Student Trustee, Feb. 4, 2010

Welcome back everyone! Second semester has now begun and things are already busy around campus.
Student Government Association attended an IBHE SAC meeting on Jan. 23-24. The meeting included a leadership seminar and sector meetings.
At the Dec. 17 board meeting Cheryl Roelfsema presented a tax levy report and the lease for the Ottawa Center was signed.
This means that for the fall semester of 2010, the Ottawa center will be open to students. This will make the commute easier for residents of Ottawa and surrounding towns.
The board also came to the agreement that the childcare center will not be included in the Community Tech Center. There was much confusion from parents and community members on what this exactly means.
When hearing this, most assumed that that meant the childcare center would be closed down all together and the program canceled, but this is not the case.
In some ways, the fact that the center is not included in this particular addition is a good thing.
Other community colleges around the state have successfully built and run a childcare center that caters to more of the community. To continue the program, most would like to see it expand and most agree that the entrance of the building needs to be easily accessed for easy drop off.
The board will take time to thoughtfully consider the best way to include a new childcare center building so that our fine teachers can continue to uphold this important program that is so valued in the community.
To all you creative students: River Currents, the campus literary magazine, is looking for submissions! Contact English professor Mark Brown if you are interested in having your work published. The magazine should be available by the end of the semester.
On Feb. 18, at the women’s and men’s home basketball game, student government will be fundraising for March of Dimes with our annual Ballin’ for Babies raffle. Tickets will be sold for $1 each, or $5 for 6.
Bring your family to enjoy the game and give to a good cause.
Any soon-to-be sophomores should start considering if they want to be a leader on campus and be involved here at IVCC. Petitions will go out soon for all sophomore-level positions on Student Government Association and for Student Trustee.
I have found the experience to be invaluable and highly rewarding. We represent the school on a state level and raise money for charities of our choice. We have a one-on-one relationship with the administration and our opinion is valued. If you want to make a difference, consider joining the Student Government Association!
