IVCC, The International Club, Transformed Christian Student Organization and Phi Theta Kappa joined together to help raise money for Haiti on Jan. 19. The groups set up a table in the lobby of building C to collect money, which will go to the American Red Cross Relief Fund in Haiti.
IVCC had raised $1,781.31, as of Jan. 23, with “individual and group donations still coming in,” said Professor of Political Science and History, and Coordinator of International/Multicultural Education programs, Amanda Bigelow.
The nation of Haiti was rocked by an earthquake on Jan. 12 and does not have the means to recover without help. “This is a tragedy beyond any comparison. The immediate devastation is hard to fathom, but rebuilding efforts must get underway and will be completely reliant on the international community. This is a long-term commitment, not a short-term one,” said Bigelow.
Lauren Data, an International Club member who volunteered at the table, said “times are tough, but I think people do what they can,” when asked about people’s willingness to donate.
PTK had a hot chocolate sale in an effort to raise more money and the International Club is considering another project.
Individuals with questions or who wish to donate may contact Bigelow at 224-0203. According to Professor Bigelow, people can make a $10 direct donation to the American Red Cross by texting HAITI to 90999. The money is then billed to their cell phone account.
