Green printing program slated for two areas

Feb. 17, 2011

Changes are coming in the way students use printers in the library and Learning Commons.
In order to conserve and better utilize resources, IVCC will soon implement Print Release Stations in the Learning Commons and the Library.
A Print Release Station is a workstation located next to a printer that will hold a print job until the user releases the job to the printer, staff from the Learning Commons reported.
In order to release a job, students will need to enter their network username as well as their network password (the same combination students use to log into the computers on campus).
Students will not need to learn a new username and password combination.
If the print job is never released by the user, it gets deleted which will result in less waste.
Print Release Stations offer a variety of benefits to the school, according to Information Technology staff. Print Release Stations are greener, allowing for less printing waste including less paper and less toner.
There is also the benefit of greater printing security, as a username and password must be entered in order to release a print job. Papers or any school work a student has worked on will not be left lying around the printer for everyone to see.
The Print Release Station also offers no surprise as to what students are printing; they will know exactly what will print before entering their username and password.
These are just a few of the multiple reasons for implementing Print Release Stations in the IVCC Learning Commons and Library.
“We hope students will embrace the upcoming changes and we are here to help,” the Learning Commons staff said.
Signs notifying students of the upcoming printing change will be placed in various locations throughout campus.
Learning Commons and Library staff will go through a training meeting in order to prepare to answer questions from students and offer support.
