IV Leader Staff, May 7, 2009
Tiffany Seibert was elected President of the Student Government Association with 232 votes in the April 14 election, beating Kati Tunget’s 122 votes.
Also elected were Kyle Wineinger to Vice President, Kassy Faber to Treasurer, Tunget to Secretary, Cheyanne Smith to Student Trustee, Kayla Vowels to Sophomore Representative and Erik Kurkowski to the Sophomore Programming Board.
Seibert said that one thing she will be working towards is “keeping the SGA as dedicated as in years past.” She also said that she wants the SGA to “go above and beyond to support the college and do what is best for everyone at IVCC.”
Smith said that she decided to run for trustee “because it was too amazing of an opportunity to pass up. I personally gain much from the experience, while also getting to help my peers and the school as a whole.”
In her time as Student Trustee, Smith said she “hope[s] to increase student space and end the use of styrofoam in the cafeteria.”
Seibert explained that she ran for SGA President because she felt like “[she] can make the student body’s opinions, concerns and issues known; and take the appropriate action. Also, Student Government is very involved in the community and with local charities, and [she] loves being a part of that.”
According to Smith, if anyone were thinking about running for a student office next year, she would tell him or her “anyone who wants to spend their time smartly and do something that matters should get involved in Student Government. Being a leader is a skill that lasts a lifetime, and it is certainly a skill you learn while serving the student body.”
A total of 357 ballots were cast in the SGA election. SGA Faculty Advisor Cory Tomasson said, “We are extremely pleased with the amount of students that voted” in the election.
Tomasson thinks the transition of the new SGA members will be smooth because many freshmen are returning to fill sophomore positions.
“This year’s SGA was very active and the new members will have to work hard to maintain the standards that have been set over the past few years; however, knowing the new members, I’m sure that this tradition will continue,” Tomasson said.
