THE GREAT DEPRESSION AND LITERATURE
    Illinois Valley Community College’s Honors English Program will present “The Great Depression: Its Literature and Relevance,” an IVCC Honors Capstone Project, on Friday, May 8, beginning at 2:30 p.m. at the La Salle Public Library, 305 Marquette St. in La Salle.
    The IVCC Honors English Program group consists of students Tom Bailey, Ben Carlson, Maureen Cools, Janey Joiner, Ashley Maltas and Tyler Swanlund and faculty advisor, English Professor Tara Coburn.
    The group will present on several Depression era works and their authors including Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck, William Faulkner and Ogden Nash.
    The English Honors Program is also collecting new and used books that evening for AAUW, (American Association of University Women), an organization devoted to advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research. Books collected will be sold to raise funding for women’s scholarships. 
    Honors members are also offering a book pick-up service, and will travel to a donor’s home or office to collect donated books. The donated books can be new or used, for any age and of any subject matter.
    The presentation is free and open to the public.

I-READ BOOK SALE
    The Illinois Valley Community College I-READ Adult Literacy Program will sponsor a "Books Are Fun" book sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, May 7 in IVCC's main lobby. Proceeds from the book fair will benefit the I-READ program. 
    I-READ trains volunteer tutors and matches them with adult learners wanting to improve their English, math or reading skills.
