Parking violators know they are breaking rules

EDITORIAL, March 19, 2009

Things have been getting a little messy in the parking lots of Illinois Valley Community College lately, and the posting in the main lobby warning drivers that they will be towed if they do not follow laws could not have come sooner.
Where have the rules gone in the past month or so? People have been parking wherever they seem to feel like dropping anchor and it’s a pain in the behind for anyone else trying to get around.
Here’s the thing: Sure, in some of the parking lanes there are spots blocked off at each end with bold, yellow lines that looks like a car should fit there; however, there IS a reason why it’s not a parking space. See, if I am driving one way and a car is coming in the opposite direction, YOUR car makes it nearly impossible to pass each other. Practically speaking, cars need to turn and all.
But even worse, it is plainly obvious that these spaces are not valid parking spots. You know it, I know it and we all know it, but some still do it. So, the question must be asked: “Are you that lazy?”
There are plenty of parking spots in the numerous lots and there is no legitimate reason to illegally park. If it’s raining, bring an umbrella. If it’s cold, wear a jacket. If you’re running late, handle it like an adult and admit you have some time management problems. If you’re having a bad day, count down from three or whatever other clever little trick therapists live by.
And by the way, 30-minute parking spaces are to be occupied for 30-minutes only and staff parking lots are for staff only. Did we really need that lesson? It’s really not rocket science. Park where you are allowed and if not, here’s to hoping you get towed and have a nice treat waiting for you after class.
