Voting competition offers reward

TRUSTEE'S CORNER
By Elizabeth Kunkel, Jan. 31, 2008

The Illinois Community College Board is a voice for community colleges in the state of Illinois. There is also a student advisory committee (ICCB-SAC) comprised of mostly student trustees from across the state.
This committee makes recommendations to the ICCB. I have attended every SAC meeting since the beginning of the year. They are every other month, and it is my responsibility to bring issues from our campus to the group and then bring solutions from the group back to IVCC.
We have one meeting left, and one of the projects this year is a Voter’s Competition among the community colleges within the ICCB-SAC. All you have to do to participate is vote in the Primary Elections on Feb. 5, get your “I voted” sticker and bring it to the Student Government table in the lobby of IVCC on Feb. 6.
The school with the highest percentage of students to vote and bring in their sticker wins! Plus, when you bring in your sticker and show your student ID you will get a prize and be automatically registered to win a gas card worth $30. I encourage everyone to participate!

Library update
The library has implemented a new research technique this semester. It is called “Ask Away.” If you cannot physically make it to the library during the hours that it is open, you can always call or e-mail during that time. E-mail is returned within 24 hours of sending it. However, if you are working on a paper at two in the morning, or you have questions about the library that cannot wait until morning, you can now go to the “Ask Away” link and get help with your research. It is a live chat available 24 hours a day, 365 days out of the year. It is always up-to-date with the databases that Jacobs Library provides. You can access this link by going to the library homepage, clicking on the “Have questions?” link on the left hand side of the screen, and click on the “Ask Away” link near the bottom of the page. Type your question, and a librarian will be there to assist you within a matter of minutes. I have used this feature myself and it is very beneficial.

SGA activities
The Student Government Association has a lot of activities and projects coming up, so keep your eye open for these. Good luck this semester! As always, if you have a concern or suggestion you would like to share with another SGA member, or me our hours are posted on our office door. Our office is Room C-108. If you are facing the TV in the cafeteria, it is the first door to the right of the TV.
SGA holds regularly scheduled meetings every other Thursday at 7:15 AM.
Everyone is encouraged to attend! My contact information besides my office hours: 815-481-2349 or kun6546@ivcc.edu.
