Both the women’s and men’s basketball teams have two games remaining until regionals gets under way. The women and men face off against Highland and Black Hawk East Feb. 21 and Feb. 25, respectively, before beginning regionals on Feb. 28.
While regional seeds have not yet been announced, both teams hope to make an impact at tournament time.
“Hopefully, we can get it together in the next 10 days,” said women’s coach Steve Crick. “I think we can. We upset Rock Valley [Feb. 16] after getting beat by them by 12 earlier. We played Highland close.
”While the team has struggled in close games, Crick said the team’s 7-18 record at press time could easily have been turned around with a few more layups made.
The team continues to be led by sophomore Shel’si Weaver, who is leading the nation in scoring in Division 2 of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Weaver averaged 30 points per game in the team’s past three games to bring her average on the year to 22.7. Crick said Weaver has been getting calls from some four-year schools and is making a case for transfer.
The men’s team is being led by Quentin Noblin, who is ranked 18th in Division II scoring with 19.5 points per game.
The men’s record at press time was 13-11, coming after a Feb. 16 weekend win vs. Rock Valley 65-64 and a loss vs. Highland 92-72 on Feb. 17.
Story Update: The men's team will host the first round of regional competition at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 at home. IVCC administrators are asking all students who attend to wear purple.
