IVCC men’s tennis got back on the winning track with a win against Waubonsee, 6-3. The team’s record stands at 25 wins with 9 losses.
No. 2-seed singles player Colby Lubanowski picked up one of six Eagle wins on the day. Lubanowski defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-0.
Coach Steve Swett continues to be impressed by the way Lubanowski is playing.
“Colby continues to be one of our strong points this year,” he said. “He has only been defeated twice this year.”
In singles, IVCC received wins from No. 5 Jonathan Hinkey and No. 6 Nick Myers.
Hinkey won his match easily 6-3, 6-2. Myers won his match 6-1, 6-4. With that win, Myers completed regular season play with an undefeated record.
“Nick has really played well all season and hopefully will carry it over into regionals,” said Swett.
Also at No. 1 singles Rob Kline lost a close battle 1-6, 6-4, 6-6 (6-8).
The high point of the day was at doubles where IV ran the table winning all three doubles matches. No. 1 doubles Kline and Lubanowski won 3-6, 7-6(11-9). With that win Swett is hoping that “they will be seeded at regionals and have a good chance of going to nationals.”
At No. 2 doubles Chris Herbert and Adam Bulfer picked up a win by a score of 6-0, 7-6(7-1). No. 3 doubles Jonathan Hinkey and Nick Myers won 6-4, 7-5.
Swett stressed that “lately doubles has been our strong point and what we feel most confident in winning. The win put IV at 2-2 on the year and looking good prior to regionals.
Before the regional tournament, Swett’s outlook on regionals was that “we plan to be competitive and hopefully advance. We know that our strong points are at doubles and at No. 2 singles with Colby and No. 6 singles with Nick. We are hoping to advance to nationals. That is our goal.”
Update: No 6. seed Myers, won all his matches at the regional tournament on Apr. 30 and will be competing in national play.
The national tournament will be May 15 in Plano, Texas.
Overall, the men’s tennis team finished sixth in the regional tournament.
