Anni Moore and Tammi Phalen were chosen to represent IVCC and recognized for academic excellence at the Phi Theta Kappa All-Illinois Academic Team Banquet in Springfield on April 5.
Biology instructor Greg Oseland said native Estonian Moore’s outstanding academic skills and “Estonian wit” prompted him to nominate her for the team.
“[Anni] has a strong character and sense of conviction; a healthy dose of common sense; and a kind heart and sincere, tender nature,” Oseland said of the 4.0 honor student.
Business instructor Bob Reese said Phalen’s profound intelligence and notable critical thinking skills make her “successful at anything she attempts.”
“She is very deserving of this award and I wish I had 30 Tammi’s in all my classes,” Reese said. “She’s one of the best students I’ve ever had.”
Moore said she enjoyed the experience.
“I liked the banquet and had a great time, but my favorite part was driving to Springfield with Dr. Goodnow,” Moore said. “I felt like I had a chance to talk and connect with her.”
Besides being recognized for academic talent, the girls received engraved golden medals and had their picture posted in the April 5 issue of the Chicago Tribune.
“I’m just happy I had the chance to represent the school,” Moore said. “IVCC has done so much for me, and I’m glad I could give something back.”
