Basic Skills Course Offered

IV Leader Staff

The Office of Continuing Education and the Math, English and Education Department have partnered to offer the Basic Skills Preparation Workshop. It will be offered at Illinois Valley Community College for the first time this spring. The workshop is scheduled for February 5th, 8:00am-3:00pm. It will meet in F-113. This workshop is designed for students who are preparing to take the Basic Skills exam. Passing of this exam is a requirement for certification for teaching in the state of Illinois.

The Basic Skills Exam is one of three professional exams prospective teachers will need to complete and pass prior to being certified as a teacher in the state of Illinois. The consortium gathered program materials and strategies for advising teacher education students. For example, it was recommended that education students complete this exam after successfully completing 45 college credits. One option is for students to attend this workshop to refresh their skills in high-level reading, language arts, mathematics and analytical writing. In addition, the workshop will address test anxiety and test taking strategies.

At IVCC the Basic Skills Workshop will include instructors from the various disciplines. Students will be able to utilize the IVCC Basic Skills Workbook with practice questions to help refresh their reading, writing, and math skills. Interested students can obtain an ICTS Registration Bulletin and Study Guide in the IVCC Counseling Center or from the Illinois State Board of Educations web site at:
