Intramural dodgeball registration ends Feb. 28

For all those who found themselves riveted by the gripping tale of Average Joe’s in the recent film Dodge Ball, there will be another dose of one-hit-and-you’re-out fun coming to IVCC as the Intramurals program hosts its dodge ball tournament on March 2.
The competition, according to intramurals director Julie Anderson, will consist of what she hopes to be six to ten teams battling it out in a single-elimination format.
While a few teams have already signed up, individuals without teams are also encouraged to register because they can be put on teams with others that sign-up individually. Anderson also hopes that not only the participant turn out will be high but that spectators will come out as well to add some energy to the competition.
The rules of the game will not unlike those from grade school past time: at the sound of a whistle, five players each from two teams will run towards balls aligned in the middle of the court and will then proceed to throw them at the their opponents from the other side of the line. Anyone hit by a ball along with anyone whose ball is caught will be out, and the first team to run out of players will be eliminated.
While dodge ball might surprise some as being a sport available at the intramural level, it is not far off from many of the activities the IVCC’s intramurals program offers.
The goals of the program, which include offering a chance for all students to be a part of athletic activity on an organized and competitive level, a chance to release some stress, and to assist students in meeting one another and making friends, have lead to a great variety of activities.
The program currently runs a basketball league and has had euchre games and kickball and plans to offer ultimate frisbee and flag football in the spring.
Anderson hopes the tournament should be yet another activity that will help students have some fun, burn some calories and get rid of some stress. The idea has shown to be successful at other schools.
Registration for the dodge ball tournament has begun and those interested in participating can continue registering individually or as teams until Feb. 28 in Building G.
