After 22 years or teaching at Illinois Valley Community
College, Alice Steljes has made the decision to retire at the end of this school
year.
Steljes, coming to IVCC to be closer to home, started teaching part time in 1983
and took on a full-time position in 1984.
She has spent her time at teaching a variety of accounting
classes, including fundamentals, tax, financial, managerial and cost accounting.
MIMIC is also a program Steljes has been active in, along with Students in Free
Enterprise, where she is the club’s advisor.
Steljes hopes that if her students were to walk away with one
thing from her class it would be that they not only learned facts, but also
skills and confidence to go on in their careers.
"I will miss not only the people who work here at IVCC, but
mostly the students," says Steljes.
Although she is "proud to be associated with such a good
school," Steljes is looking forward to spending time with her grandchildren,
traveling and getting involved in volunteer work. She will continue to pursue
hobbies in baking, camping and gardening.
"It will be very hard to leave IVCC with it being such a big
part of my life," said Steljes. "I will miss it."
Steljes plans to continue teaching an online class next year,
but is not sure of her plans beyond that.
