Harry Potter chosen as a worthy topic for debate
Feb. 21, 2003
Illinois Valley Community College will offer a series of lectures this spring focusing on Harry Potter. These lectures, presented in conjunction with the Honors Colloquium program, are free and open to the public.
All lectures will be from 2 to 3:50 p.m. on the Wednesdays listed below in Room F-114:
“Planning a Lesson for Young Children,” March 5, Sallee Beneke, IVCC early childhood education instructor; “The Science of Fiction,” March 26, Mike Phillips, IVCC geology instructor; “Masculine Magic and Feminine Mayhem: Gendered Messages in Harry Potter,” April 9, Kimberly Radek, IVCC English instructor; and “Harry Potter’s Hogwarts and Computer Mathematical Predictability: The Game of Game Theory,” April 23, David Gordon, IVCC economics instructor.
“Harry Potter was chosen as a subject worthy of exploration because it is a popular and controversial topic that has had great impact on the community,” said Radek. Radek would like to foster involvement between students and the community and draw interest in the honors program. The likely topic for the fall lecture series will be The Lord of the Rings.
