Referendum deserves another try
IV Leader Editorial, Jan. 30, 2003
We here at the IV Leader feel that our beloved school is slightly turning their backs on us, much like the community did last semester. It has only been a few weeks, and already we are feeling the results of the recently rejected referendum.
Nearly 115 classes have been cancelled. Three women’s basketball games, three men’s basketball games, 12 baseball games and three golf tournaments have also been cut from the schedule.
In order to save a significant amount of money, the heating and cooling systems will be adjusted slightly.
Beginning in the summer, some areas will depend on sunlight rather than electrical lighting.
We realize that because of the failed referendum, the above reductions must be made. But, tell me why the board is even considering leaving the referendum off of the April ballot?
When IVCC called upon the students, we answered. We did our part. We registered to vote, rallied in support and voted “yes.”
Now, the second time around, the students are still at bat for IV, but it’s the school who has forfeited the game.
It is clearly understandable that some sacrifices need to be made in order to make up for the referendum loss. What is not understandable, however, is why the administration has tossed in the towel.
We didn’t give up on you, why would you give up on us?
Our advice to the board?
“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”
