IV LEADER staff positions are open to any student, part-time or full-time, with an interest in any area of publication. Staff members do not have to be communications majors nor do they have to be enrolled in journalism or communications courses. Participation on the staff is voluntary.

The central editorial staff, responsible for decision making, is composed of the various editors.

Interested in writing a column or expressing your opinions?
If you would like an opportunity to express your opinions to people on the IVCC campus, become a columnist. HOW? Submit an opinion piece on or before deadline. Members of the student editorial staff will review all of the opinion pieces submitted by deadline and will select those that are the best written/most interesting for publication that issue.
WHAT TOPIC(S)? Anything. Any topic of interest to members of the campus community will be considered. And remember that members of the campus community have a variety of interests and concerns and range in age from about 17 to 70 plus. Columns can deal with campus issues, local community issues, statewide, nationwide or worldwide issues, and discuss politics, business, education, science, technology, any areas of the arts (music, publishing, art, movies, drama). Treatment of the topics can be serious or humorous.
WHAT FORMAT? Submit a hard copy that meets the following requirements:
- Keyboarded and double spaced
- Your name as author at the top
- Suggestion of a column name at the top
A column name is what a recurring column would be called; for example a music column might be called "Sound Ideas," a movie review column might be called "Reel Reviews," a column on campus issue might be called "Campus Comment," and a sports column might be called "From the Sidelines.".
WHAT LENGTH? Typically, columns range from about 250 to 500 words. Longer columns are a space problem.
WHAT ELSE? The staff needs your photo. Either submit a photo (wallet, color photo is fine) with your first column (we can return it) or come by the advisor’s office (B-320) or the IV LEADER Office (B-317) and have your photo taken – but well before deadline. The newspaper publishes 1" by 1 ½" photos (head shots) of columnists with their opinions so readers can identify the writer.
Interested in artwork? Cartooning? Computer graphics?
If you would like an opportunity to have your artwork, published, become a cartoonist. HOW? Submit a cartoon(s) on or before deadline. Members of the student editorial staff will review all of the cartoons submitted by deadline and will select those that are the best/most interesting for publication that issue.

Cartoons can deal with campus issues, local community issues, statewide, nationwide or worldwide issues -- politics, business, education, science, technology, sports, the arts, whatever.
WHAT FORMAT? Cartoons can be freehand or computer-generated, single-panel or multiple-panel strip.
WHAT SIZE? Apache columns are two inches wide, so work in multiples of two inches.
SINGLE-PANEL CARTOONS: The newspaper usually prints single-panel cartoons four inches (two columns) wide by three – four inches tall.
MULTIPLE-PANEL STRIPS: The newspaper prints strips in multiples of two inches, usually six or eight inches wide.
FREEHAND CARTOONS: Usually it is best to draw larger than will be printed since shrinking for print sharpens the lines. But be careful with wording which will also shrink. If wording is hand-drawn, make it large enough to be readable in printed size, or add instructions to have wording added to the cartoon on the computer when the cartoon is scanned.
HOW TO SUBMIT FREEHAND? Use black ink on white paper.
- Include your name or initials in the drawing.
- Write your full name on the sheet outside of the cartoon.
- Make wording clear, easy to read, large enough for down-sizing OR
- Provide instructions (and space) for adding wording to the cartoon on the computer
HOW TO SUBMIT COMPUTER – GENERATED? Submit a hard copy and a disk copy.
- Include your name or initials in the drawing.
- Write your full name on the hard copy outside of the cartoon.
- Write your name on the disk label
- Use a widely readable format for saving the cartoon. The newspaper uses IBM-compatible formats including Corel Draw and can read cdr, cmg, pcx, jpg, tif, gif and a few others. If you are using the latest version of a program, consider saving as an earlier version
- Identify the file and file extension for the cartoon on the hard copy and on the disk label
