Eagles split early games
Sept. 11, 2003
Illinois Valley Community College’s Eagles volleyball team opened the season with a split of its first two matches
The Eagles defeated Lincoln College in Lincoln Sept. 4 with a four-set match. Scores were 30-18, 30-18, 24-30 and 30-24.
The team lost to Black Hawk East Sept. 8 18-30, 23-30, 20-30.
“The sophomores have been doing a great job leading the team,” said Julie Sherbeyn, Eagles assistant coach. “Lori Zebron and Kristin Black are our team captains and have shown great leadership on and off the court.”
Returning from last year are Zebron (Outside Hitter), Black (Middle Blocker), Abbi Bosnich (Setter), and Jessica Lund (S).
The new freshmen are Heather Ballard (OH), Alyssa Boggio (Defensive Specialist), Meghan Mertel (DS/OH), Vanessa Hrovat (MB) and Nora Grusk (OH). The team has one transfer student Sarah Payan (S), who is sophomore using her first year of eligibility.
The Eagles expect some tough competition from area teams. Sherbeyn said Kishwaukee will be tough as always as they are reigning national champions.
“We should be very successful in our conference which is consistently strong throughout,” she said. “We had a great season opener against Lincoln College, so we should have good momentum going into our first meeting with Kish (Sept. 15) in Malta.
