Positions open for student government
By Courtnie Shanyfelt
IV Leader Staff, Sept. 11, 2003
The Student Government Association is one of the many clubs and organizations on the IVCC campus that students can be involved with by running for an office.
Officers for the 2003-2004 school year are Brett Dubois, president; Jason Miller, vice president; Abby Zukowski, treasurer; Ashley Bansberg, secretary; and Andy Simko, student trustee. Speech instructor Cory Tomasson advises the association.
New officers are needed for the positions of freshman and sophomore representatives. Two freshmen programming board representatives also are needed. Petitions for those offices will be available starting Sept. 15. The petitions can be picked up in the vice president of student services’ office, C-221, or they will be available on IVCC’s Spirit Day, which is scheduled for Sept. 22.
Petitions must be turned in by 4 p.m. Sept. 23.
The election will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 2 and 3. All IVCC students are eligible to run for office and to vote in elections.
SGA meets every other Tuesday of the month at 7:15 a.m. in the Fireplace Lounge, located in Building B. The first meeting of the school year was Aug. 19.
Spirit Day is the main issue up for discussion at the recent meetings. Spirit Day will be Sept. 22 and will feature food, games, a disc jockey and many other events.
The lack of members in SGA also was discussed. President Brett Dubois said SGA has helped her socially as well as academically. She recommends that anyone interested should run for office because it is a great opportunity and can be used on future college resumes and applications.
In addition to Spirit Day and membership, SGA also discussed fund-raising. Fund raising goes toward different charities as well as different activities and special events for the SGA. To find out more about SGA, go to the Web site, www.ivcc.edu/sga.com. The SGA office is currently under construction, but interested students can contact an SGA member or Tomasson.
The next meeting of the SGA will be at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16 in the Fireplace Lounge.
