Nominations from students sought for faculty award

Have you ever had an instructor that stood apart from all the rest, one who motivated you to reach higher and look deeper?
Or maybe there was a staff member who helped you gather together the collection of information imposed upon you by various colleges and helped you to understand the direction your career is taking you. Whatever the case is, now is the chance for students to give back to a full-time faculty member or a counselor the opportunity for the respect that they deserve.
Nominations are currently being accepted for the annual Faculty Excellence Award. This award is to recognize instructors and counselors for outstanding service in teaching, leadership, professional development and contributions to the college and the community.
The nominee should be the kind of person who challenges students to pursue goals, prepares students to make life choices, improves students skill for employment and/or success in their academic endeavors, motivates students to be an active and concerned citizen of the community and is active in the community.
This award is only for instructors and counselors who have been part of IVCC’s full time staff for at least three consecutive years. Once an individual has won the award, he/she will not be eligible for nomination for another three years.
“We want to get more students to get involved and nominate teachers,” said geology instructor Mike Phillips. “They are the ones who see how the teacher is doing their job on a regular basis.”
Last year the winner was history instructor Dr. Steven Charry for his “effective teaching style.” Charry was nominated by Tim Horger, biology instructor.
2001 was the first time that the Faculty Excellence Award was distributed and the award was held by nursing instructor Pam Mammano. In 2002, the award went to Randy Rambo, an English Instructor
To obtain a nomination form one can access it online and submit nominations at http://www.ivcc.edu/awards or pick one up at the Human Resources Office (C-352).
The due date is Monday, Nov. 10 and it can be returned to the Human Resources Office. Address it to Attention: Jackie Fox, or send electronically to jackie_fox@ivcc.edu
Specific examples are needed as to why the instructor or counselor deserves this award. Also be prepared to write a 1-2 paragraph article on how and why this teacher or staff member excels above the rest. Petitions are not accepted, only written comments.
Decisions are reached based on the performance of the teacher or member, not upon the writing ability of those nominating candidates for the award.
